What is merely permissible is not the goal for Christian behavior. The goal is what is beneficial or constructive (literally, promotes growth in Christian wisdom, grace, affection, virtue, holiness, blessedness).

1 Corinthians 10:23
"All things are lawful, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful, but not all things edify. "

1 Thessalonians 5:11
"Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing. "

The greek word is:
Oikodomeo
1. to build a house, erect a building
to build (up from the foundation)
to restore by building, to rebuild, repair metaph.
2. to found, establish
to promote growth in Christian wisdom, affection, grace, virtue, holiness, blessedness
to grow in wisdom and piety

You can find it translated this many times:
KJV (39) - be in building, 1; build, 24; build up, 1; builder, 5; edify, 7; embolden, 1;
NAS (39) - build, 13; builders, 4; building, 2; built, 10; edified, 1; edifies, 3; edify, 1; rebuild, 4; strengthened, 1;
