Chalkboard Wall and Morning Time

I've been working on this project (and a few others) in my spare time the last two weeks.

I forgot to take a before picture. It had the same wallpaper on it as the kitchen wall. There was wallpaper to tear off and then the glue to remove. Removing wallpaper glue is a sticky mess, but this came of super easy compared to the horror stories I read online.

Next, there were holes to patches and sand, switch plates to remove, and wires to cap off (my dad taught me how to put a wire nut on).  Finally, I wiped everything down and primed the wall.

Primed and ready to go.

1. Look at the project list on the left. I am checking things off and adding new things all the time.

2. We are starting a little more organized morning time during breakfast.
•I hope to read through the Bible verses several times each morning and work on memorizing them.
• in the future we will add the catechism work here too.
• the missionary of the week or month (depending on how those weeks go) will get prayed for each day and maybe a letter written to them.
• the hymn will change every few months. We are going to work on memorizing some new hymns. Just singing them at night isn't working to get enough memorized.
• in the future I hope to also add a book that we are read from, a piece of classical music to listen to, and some art appreciation (maybe we will work on copying some famous art or just do our own art projects while we listen to music or me reading).

3. I am workin on a chore chart. I'll post that when I am finished.

Anyhow, that's my latest finished project. I patched and painted a doorframe this week. And I've been spending lots of time freshening up the downstairs bathroom (which is really just painting everything white that used to be tan - looks so much better). Pictures coming soon.

Suggestions for favorite classical pieces?  What music should we listen to? What art work or artist should we study?

5 things

Life has been very busy lately.

So, 5 quick things.

1. I've taught ESL the last four weeks and as much as I love it and the students, it is also really exhausting (it could be that I spend way too much time on my lesson plans...). English is so confusing. Teaching a math class would be so much easier. But then it would be all about me and not about what God can do through my weakness. I haven't scared any of the students off yet...
Anyhow, the boys are getting a little tired of hearing that I am working on somethings ESL related. I also presented at another church about partnering together this week. It went well. Hopefully a blog post about that some time in the future. I've been trying to spend my little bits of free time with the boys, so, no fancy house projects right now.

2. I made open faced sandwiches for dinner tonight (chicken, cheddar, and apple on bagettes). We had grapes and broccoli on the side. Why don't I do sandwiches more often? It is super easy.

3. I cooked and shredded chicken for three meals this week. Two portions I froze for this weekend. One is for tomorrow night. Future Faith thanks me.

4. People give you lots of stuff when you move. So far we have acquired:
2 couches
1 end table
2 lamps
1 sitting chair
1 desk chair
6 Dining chairs
2 dining tables
5 kid chairs
1 kid table (on loan)
A curtain for a window

I am purposely keeping the spare room empty. I need some empty space.

5. My plants need to be watered.

Menu for the week:
•Open face chicken, Apple, and cheddar sandwiches
•Minestrone and crusty bread
•Shrimp Etouffee and rice
•Spaghetti and Meatballs
•Chicken & Cheese quesadilla pie

The List

I'm a list person (if you scroll back through my blog since college you will see lots of lists) and I'm a paper person (no lists on my phone for me). I like to visually see progress. Jared sent me (in an email) a list of items that need to be accomplished sooner rather than later. I converted it to paper.

This isn't everything to do. That list would be too long. This one doesn't even include painting and unpacking boxes. Those will be added later.

This is just a few of the things we hope to accomplish in the next few months. It is handy to glance over and choose an item to tackle when I have a few spare minutes. It is also rewarding to see items moved to the finished side.

I spent the last two quiet times scrubbing that floor in the fireplace room. Now I can move that over! Last night Jared put all the doors back on upstairs. Another item off the list (and the bonus of keeping the house warmer since there is no heat upstairs).

That wall better enjoy it's short useful life. It is coming down in a year or two. :)

Instead of cats

I saw this photo on Instagram and realized that if left on my own I would probably hoard vintage Pyrex. Instead of cats you would walk into my house in 40 years and this shelf would all be filled up with Pyrex dishes. I would also collect polish pottery, but it is way more expensive. So, there wouldn't be as many of those pieces.

However, I collect neither (in any significant quantity) because thankfully:
1. I have a husband who hates collecting junk and having things just sitting around useless. He has rubbed off on me...a little.
2.  I have children to feed. Should I buy food or this dish?
3. I hate cleaning extra stuff.
4. It just wouldn't be efficient. Part of me wants all these dishes and part of me says, "why have them? You couldn't use all of them." I really appreciate having just enough (and maybe a few extra pretty dishes for decoration).
5. I'm a saver, not a spender. When I do spend money it tends to be on things that matter (like events and people) or will last (like a good quality coat or vacuum). I'm probably a little too much of a saver, but again Jared rounds me out and pushes me towards the spending side a bit more.

You will definitely find a few Pyrex and Polish pottery pieces around my house. I'm looking forward to some open shelves and glass cupboards to display my prettiest pieces.

I don't really know the point of this post. I'm just rambling. But I love seeing other people's collections and I love visiting the vintage Pyrex section of antique stores.

Cats.

Yes. These are the cat shelves. :) more pictures on that later.

I started unpacking my books yesterday. Maybe I'll display some Pyrex in between them while I wait for room in my kitchen. They aren't doing any good packed up in boxes.

Rabble. Ramble. Ramble.

I'm avoiding finishing my ESL lesson. I better go finish that.

Closet under the stairs

One reason that influenced my move is that their was a closet under the stairs.  It is smaller and not as short, but I was pretty sure that it was empty behind the wall and that there was extra space just waiting to be used. Until today it was just a theory. :) It is now confirmed.

This wall is going to come down and I'll refinish the empty part under the stairs to have a new play closet. Im pretty exciting to try my hand out at drywall and finishing. :) I'm having trouble finding storage for the boys' toys at the new house. They just don't fit on shelves well. Now I just have to convince Jared to bump this higher on the to-do list.

And this is what my sink looked like yesterday while I was prepping food for ESL. Last night's lesson was on food again. :) I miss my deep sink and well laid out counter space. I am having trouble working efficiently in this kitchen still. But I also haven't come up with a good solution yet, so no kitchen projects until I am certain!

We all caught a 48 hour bug this week that knocked us off our feet. It hurt to walk and climbing the stairs zapped all our energy. We've done lots of sleeping and reading. Maybe we'll have some exciting new projects in a month or two.

Moving

Guys, this moving thing is hard.

I miss my old house. It was the perfect cozy size and I keep thinking about it. I just want to keep this house stored away some where until I need a retirement house. I walked into it to start painting today and it smelled like my house, it felt like my house, the colors were my colors, and James looked so happy rolling around the floors while I painted. I miss it.

And maybe that is the point, as with all things that we love in life, they point us to our eternal home. We shouldn't be too comfortable here. I should long for my eternal home as much as I do for my little haven house on the south side of town. I don't. But I should. In a way it is good to force myself to be uncomfortable and to leave things I love. It shakes up my life. It is a reminder of what really matters.

I have a entire house post saved in my drafts, but I haven't unpacked my computer yet to be able to edit it. You can look forward to more house sappiness in a week or two.

James thinks so too. We all miss the play closest.

Edit: I guess what I miss is the smallness and coziness. I'm not used to big. I'm not sure if I like bigger better. The boys do.

Cleaning and painting

It looks even more impressive in person. :) I only scrubbed the kitchen, dining area, and hallway. It's a lot of work. I still have the front entry way and the whole fireplace room.

I also washed out all our trash cans today, painted our bookshelves, and primed the coat closet.

Little by little.
Inch by inch.

And I discovered a cat living in the ductwork below our kitchen nook... Grrrr.

Kitchen Packing

If you have read my blog for a while, you know that the kitchen is my favorite space in the house (my sewing room and play closet under the stairs are in second and maybe my cozy living room...). But I LOVE my kitchen!

I love having an efficient kitchen. Love it. It makes cooking more enjoyable and just makes me happy. So, the thought of people helping me unpack and asking me a hundred questions and not putting stuff where I wanted was really stressing me out. Plus, having to make decisions on moving day seemed extra stressful.

The more I thought about it the more I just wanted to curl up in a ball and cry or try to do everything myself. Both of which are terrible ideas. Then I had a brilliant idea (at least I think it is pretty smart). I wrote up all the cupboards and drawers and both my old and new house. I then assigned everything a new home.

Now when I pack a box from the kitchen I mark where it goes in the new house.

They are also marked with what shelf in the cupboard they go to. Now anyone can unpack my boxes for me and I can go and get other things accomplished. :)

And the comments on my blog don't seem to be working again for some people. So, if you want to volunteer to help unpack boxes, because it will be so easy now (ha ha), text or call me.

Do you have any favorite packing tips?

Floors

I only took one shot of the finished floors today. I paired it with two before photos I had.

Same spot in the room, just from different angles.
Before photo is looking out of living room towards front door.
After is from the front door looking into the room.

These are both looking in, but you can't see the corner with the most damage from the cats in the before. Almost all of stains are gone!

Goodbye ugly stained carpet.
Goodbye cat stained hardwood.
Goodbye cat smell.
Goodbye shelf full of cat figurines. :)

I LOVE the way they turned out. I just keep looking at them and looking at them. I can't believe how beautiful they are. I'll post more photos (probably in a few months when we get more settled in and I have time) of all the other rooms. The master bedroom is the only one that we couldn't get the stains much lighter. It must have been the cats favorite room. Ugh.

Time: Jared probably put about 80 hours into them. I had about 20.

Equipment used: drum sander and edger sander. We rented them for three days for about $400. We bought a pole sander for the finished sanding job and a squeegee to apply sealer. We owned everything else we used.

Sealer and Poly: Bona Amber is the seal. Bona Mega the poly. We purchase them online for about $500.

Rooms: four bedrooms, a sewing room, one hallway, living room, and school room.

Square footage: 1200sqft.

Total cost ended up being around $1000. I haven't added up all the receipts yet. Quotes for the floor were $3000-$4000.

Busy busy

Sorry for the silence around here right now. It has been a little busy.

We spent some time with our favorite girl cousin. She and Warren speak the same language. Four kids is no joke though. Crazy crazy.

James found his feet.

We played outside lots and lots for two day while it was in the 60s.

It was Martin's birthday.

He used to be this small. :(

And Jared has been sanding lots of floors ... I just helped a few days.

Comments

I have the comments set for me to moderate every comment because it seems to be the only way some people can comment.

I've tried relaxing the settings from no moderation to some moderation (I would rather it be that way - so much easier). Those options don't allow some people to comment. So, for now when you comment it emails me and I have to approve the comment. It will post a few hours later when I approve it.

Sorry about the delay.

A teaser

I know, I said no kitchen renovations for at least a year, but I was just itching to get this cabinet out of the way. We will call this part one.

Before

After part one
1. I removed the doors on the built in bookshelves way back in the picture by the fireplace. I'm going to paint those white and the backs some fun color (red or blue).

2. The whole kitchen is going to be gutted and made bigger (we plan to knock down some walls and take out some closets), but that is on the one year plan. I want to work in the space for a while and get a feel for a good flow. I did know I wanted these cabinets that blocked my view of the dining area gone. Goodbye cabinets. Hello, openess.

3. We will remove that random piece of wall between the fireplace room and kitchen area when we gut the kitchen. I just want to kick it out right now though. Why? Who thought two doorways would be a good idea?

4. That wood paneling is going to be painted soon. I give it a month, maybe two. It is near the top of the list.

5. That bulkhead above the cabinets is horrible. Lost storage space and it makes the kitchen smaller.  That will be torn out when the kitchen is gutted.

We are going to play around with this space a lot before we actually change it. We plan to try some paint colors out while we wait.

Before (cats cats cats - the biggest cat I have ever seen hopped up and sprawled out on the counter when I first visited the house...yes, Up. On. The. Counter. Where food is served and made.)

After part one

Oh, and the dishwasher, stove, and frig are all 15 years or older. They aren't going to be replaced until they bite the dust. Why spend money when you don't need to? I hope they live a nice long life.

Can you paint a refrigerator? I really don't like it white. But I am not about to replace something that works.

I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God...

Exodus 17:8-13
Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses' hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it, while Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side, and the other on the other side. So his hands were steady until the going down of the sun. And Joshua overwhelmed Amalek and his people with the sword.

Two weeks ago ESL started again for the Spring semester and I just wanted to give you a brief update. God is moving in some amazing ways to evolve the ESL program into something better and it is so neat to watch.  Sometimes God uses people and ways that you don't expect. We are moving forward to stage 2 of the ESL plan.

When I proposed the ESL program almost 2 years ago I wrote in my 5 year plan that I wanted to partner with other churches in the area to expand the program.  I also wrote that I wanted to have a ministry to the three colleges in the area.  I had NO IDEA how either of those things would come to be.

Over this Fall I was starting to feel a little bit like Moses - weary.  This Fall was going to be my break, time to regroup, time to think through the ministry and come up with new ideas for it.  But that didn't happen.  The director that was going to take over me for the fall semester (while I was on maternity leave) moved away.  So, with less then a month to ESL, we scrambled around to figure out some way for ESL to run each Thursday without me having to be there.  Of course, God provided staff to be boots-on-the-ground and they did an amazing job or keeping things running.  I am so thankful for the three people he provided to keep things straight every Thursday and all the many additional hands that came and helped with set-up, registration, and interviews.  God provided, but I still had to spend time organizing and directing some. It wasn't the break I was hoping for (especially when you add in a newborn and mono).

But God is always moving and working. I entered December tired and discouraged because it was getting harder to find volunteers, especially for our children's ministry. But guess what? In the summer, a friend of a friend had contacted me and asked to teach in our ESL ministry. I accepted, of course, who says no when someone is asking to help?!? I didn't expect her to have the same vision for ESL and want to take ideas and run with them. But she did and she is moving the vision of ESL forward to other churches. I am so thankful for Ginger.

I have had policies to update since last Summer. She has taken them and transformed them. She has set up meeting with other churches and contacted people at local colleges. She has recruited childcare volunteers, ESL teachers, and snack donations. I just show up for meetings and talk about ESL. She has held my hands steady so that ESL can continue and I am so grateful for her encouragement and desire to partner in this ministry.

I am excited to see what happens in the future. We continue to pray for doors to be opened to sharing the gospel with international students and people in our community.  Please, pray with us when you think of us. We can do nothing without His power.

New Series

Maybe instead of new series it should say, "first series ever". Yesterday we closed on a house (more on the house later). It is dated, but livable while we update things a little at a time. So, lots of home projects and before and after pictures will be coming.

The previous owner loved cats. I mean LOVED cats. I've never seen so many cat figures and pictures and rugs and shower curtains. It was crazy.

The first things to go where all the carpets. Goodbye cat hair. Goodbye smell. Next up is refinishing the hardwood floors that were below the carpets. When those are finished in about two weeks we will officially move our stuff over. I will post lots of pictures, but not now. I have all the before pictures loaded to a Flickr account just for house projects.

(Look at all those cats!!!!! Yes, these is a screen door between the dining room and kitchen...see it on the far right... It is now out with the carpets on the back porch.)

How did the name of the series come about? My dad had a coworker that would tell him whenever anything broke around the house, "so, you want to be a homeowner, do you?" That is too long of a name for a series... SYWTBAHODO? It is shorten to HODO (the home owner series).

We have a whole notebook of ideas and I can't wait to share them with you all as we check them off the list.

Quick Chicken Enchiladas

Quick Chicken Enchiladas
Serves 4

* 1 onion, chopped fine
* 1 T vegetable oil
* 2 garlic cloves, minced
* 1 pound ground turkey (we usually use shredded chicken, but you can use ground beef or ground turkey or ground chicken or ground pork)
* 8-12 oz. monterey Jack cheese, shredded (2-3 cups use more cheese if you like them cheesier, I just use 2 cups -- I also have used sharp cheese when I am out of monterey jack)
* 20 oz red enchiladas sauce (see note below)
* 1/4 cup jarred jalapenos, drained and chopped
* 1/2 cup minced cilantro (Jared doesn't like cilantro, so I leave this out)
10-14 (6 inch) corn tortillas (we have friends that do flour tortillas, but we like the corn better)
(optional) 1 can black beans
(optional) rice or corn (whatever you have around that you need to use up)

--Note on enchiladas sauce.
Giant Brand was a good.
El Paso tastes like weak tomato sauce. Not good.
Acme tastes like chili powder. It is spicy and gritty. Not good.
Food Lion Brand is the best I have found so far. It is also mild, but not quite as bland as El Paso. Unfortunately, their brand comes in a glass jar of 18 oz.  So, I just add a bit of water it stretch it to 20 oz. I am not going to open another can just to skim off 2 oz.

1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and head to 400 degrees. Combine onion and oil in skillet over medium-high heat and cook until onion is softened and lightly browned, 3 to 5 minutes. Stir in garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir in meat (shredded chicken or ground meat). If using ground beef or chicken, add it raw and cook 5-7 minutes until no longer pink.  Stir in 1-2 cups of cheese,1/2 - 1 cup of enchilada sauce (I like more in mine), jalapenos, cilantro, and black beans (if you are adding them). Season with salt and pepper.

2. Meanwhile, stack tortillas, cover with plastic wrap or damp towel, microwave until softened and pliable, about 1 minute.

3. Pour a little enchilada sauce in the bottom of a 13" x 9" pan. Place about 1/4 of a cup of the chicken mixture on a tortilla and roll up.  Place the seam side down in the pan. Repeat until the pan is filled. I put 10 across and then tuck 2 sets of 2 on the sides.  Top with 1 cup enchilada sauce and 1 cup cheese.

4. Cover with aluminum foil and bake 10 minutes. Remove foil and continue to bake until cheese is completely melted, about 5 minutes.  I don't use the foil.  I just bake it until the cheese is melted, but they can dry out if left in to cook for too long.

Note: We have noticed that they taste better if you make them in the morning and let the spices sit together all day and then cook them in the evening.   The flavors have time to develop more.

Legos = math

I think Legos are going to be math for a long time.

Quiet time!!! Love love love.

Can I just say how much I am loving my 45 minutes of quiet time every day?!? This is one of the best ideas I have ever had. We all are better for it.

The scheduled meals and snack time are also wonderful. It simplifies everything.

I'm not completely bound to it, but I follow the structure. For example. Today the kids woke up an hour and a half earlier than normal. I bumped lunch to ten, quiet time to noon (and boy, did they need it), and snack to one. We'll probably eat dinner early too.

Usually I spent most of quiet time with him. He's so snuggly and jolly. How can I resist?

Also, he is growing way too fast. How can he already sit on my hip? We are like twins with our bald spots. :) Well, his whole head is bald, I just lose hair in the temples. Got to love that post baby hair loss. Jared keeps reminding me that it comes back. You can see it is already coming back in in short wispy pieces.

Schedule

I mentioned a few weeks ago that I wanted to add a little more structure to our lives. All the times for daily and weekly events are in my head, but that makes them easy to shift around and easy to forget. I sketched up a cleaning plan (what rooms get cleaned on which day) and worked in some times for reading, watering plants, cooking, playing, outside, and some schoolwork.

More details later.  I'm sure it is going to change and shift around a bit. It is already making things smoother around here. Instead of staring off into space and wondering what to do I check the schedule. :) I follow it about 50% accurately right now. It is a good start.

It is really easy to get everything done when you just have one child. But add in a few more children and they all need different things: the baby needs to be fed, the toddler needs attention and some sit-in-mom's-lap-and-read time, the 3 year old wants to learn some letters... It makes is so much easier to plan for these things. Otherwise, I find I get to the end of the day and I have either just done whatever they ask all day (which is exhausting) and nothing that I need OR I have done all my chores, but not spent much time with any of them (which is exhausting). There has to be a good balance.

One thing I wanted to do was draw up a chart for the boys. They ask me all day long, "when is snack? When is lunch? When is dinner?" To make is easier for everyone I decided to make it the same time every day.

Today Martin traced circles and then cut them out. Aren't they great?!? I made them into clocks. Warren helped me count them (quite a few times). I asked them for suggestions for breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner. You will see oatmeal, eggs and bacon, a sandwich and grapes, an apple, goldfish, and soft and hard tacos.

When we finished putting it all together and hung it below the clock it was 11:00. Martin looked up and informed me that it was lunchtime.

Roller Coaster

Guys, you know that feeling before you jump on a sled to ride down a hill or when you ate first in line for the roller coaster, but it hasn't pulled in yet? It is like, if I don't get on, I won't experience any danger. I won't get myself into something I can't handle. Run away! Get out while you can!

Know that feeling?

Sometimes it happens before events in life. Should I have another child? Should I take that job? Should I buy a house that needs a lot of work? Should I start an ESL ministry? Should I expand that ESL ministry?

It comes at the point where you still have time to turn back. Whatever the decision is you know it is going to require a lot of work.  Probably more work then you can handle. But you know what, I'm learning that is probably a good thing. Because in my weakness and tiredness, God pulls through. When He calls you do something He provides what you need when you need it. You might not feel prepared right now, but when that moment comes, He'll be there.

And today I'm about to step on that roller coaster again, front seat, where I can see everything that is going on. Where I lose control, but where I give over control to a God who controls everything.

Tonight I present stage 2 of our ESL ministry - partnering with other churches in our area to expand our reach. And if it is approved, it means work, lots of it. Writing new policies, recruiting more staff, paperwork, meetings, and presentations. It means scheduling my time so that every moment counts, no twiddling my thumbs while I flitter away time on Facebook or putting aside a book I want to read so I can work on emails. It means not spending evening doing things I want to do with my family because I am at meetings or ESL.  Self control. It means opening my house up inviting people over (something I am not good at doing).

But it also means giving God a chance to work through my messes. I know I can't handle this, which just means all the more glory to His name when anything good happens in our ESL ministry. It is a scary place to be. Knowing you can't handle something, but taking it on anyhow.

So. Tonight at 6:30 the roller coaster car arrives. I take a deep breath. Put one foot in front of the other. Buckle my seatbelt. And that is all I can do. I hold on for the ride.

To God be the glory. Great things He has done and is doing. Pray for wisdom as we hopefully get approval to move forward to stage two.

One of my favorite Piper quotes.

Snow!

It snowed 10" around here. That is rare. We are usually happy with 3". The boys, Martin especially, are loving the snow. They've been out three different times for over an hour.  Jared took two of those trips while I was feeding the baby. But I did make it out and I spent most of the time running around to keep warm. :)

In my spare time I've been working on slides for an ESL presentation, made waffles, bacon, and eggs for second breakfast (after the first round of snow playing) and made a new kind of soup (I'll probably blog about it because it was delicious).

I also fixed three of our window blinds that the boys had broken. I'd take photos and tell you how to replace a broken slat, but there are several really good YouTube videos. It is pretty easy and it looks so much better then have a broken (or taped) slat. If you have a broken slat, look up a video and fix it!! You can do it. Really. You can do it. It takes about five minutes.

The chickens aren't big fans of snow.

Book Total for Year

I updated my book list for the year just in case you want to see what I read this year. Maybe someday I will have more time to write brief reviews.

Mexican Rice

This recipe is very good, but honestly, I cheat and buy the little boxes of mexican rice most of the time for dinner.  I am going to post the recipe for the enchiladas we love next week. They are from ATK as well.  :) I get almost all of my new recipes from them these days.

Mexican Rice – From America's Test Kitchen (of course)
Serves 6 to 8

2 Tomatoes, peeled and quartered
1 white onion, peeled and quartered
3 jalapeno chiles
2 cups long-grain white rice
1/4 cup vegetable oil
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 T tomato paste
1-1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup cup minced cilantro

  1. Adjust oven rack to middle position and over to 350 degrees. Process tomatoes and onions in food processor until smooth. Transfer mixture to 2 cup measuring cup. If necessary, spoon off excess so that volume equals 2 cups. Remove ribs and seeds from 2 jalapenos, mince and set aside. Mince remaining jalapeno, including ribs and seeds; set aside.
  2. Place rice in large fine-mesh strainer and rinse under cold water until water runs clear, about 1-1/2 minutes. Shake rice vigorously in strainer to remove all excess water.
  3. Heat oil in oven-safe 12" skillet or dutch oven over medium-high heat for 1-2 minutes. Drop 3 or 4 rice grains into oil; if grains sizzle, oil is ready. Add rice and cook, stirring frequently, until rice is light golden and translucent, 6-8 minutes. Reduce heat to medium; add garlic and seeded minced jalapeno; and cook, stirring frequently, until fragrant, about 1-1/2 minutes. Stir in pureed tomatoes and onions, chicken broth, tomato paste, and salt. Increase heat to medium-high and bring to boil. Cover pan and transfer to over. Bake until liquid is absorbed and rice is tender, 30-35 minutes, stirring well halfway through cooking.
  4. Stir in cilantro and reserved minced jalapeno with seeds to taste. Serve immediately with lime wedges.

Sock Organization

Someone suggested that I give the boys shoe boxes to decorate and we could store their socks in those (Thanks, Kelly!). I love that idea and when their socks get bigger and I have to move them to a larger drawer, I will be doing that (and probably be blogging about it in a few years). I'll have to save a few shoe boxes.

I did find these extra plastic bins I bought to organize our craft supplies. They fit in the drawer perfectly. And I was able to get all their socks in them. So for now, this is our solution. It is going to be so much easier to find the right socks.

I wish I had remembered to take a before picture. Just imagine the drawer full of socks and no bins. :)

Merry Christmas!!

Merry Christmas from all of us!

All my siblings are in town. We've stayed up late three nights in a row. It's been fun, but exhausting. Today we crashed and all took naps - some short (me) and some long (boys).

The boys received some great new books, all sorts of creative toys (including a stuffed chicken), Coast Guard action figures and a helicopter, their own custom made plates from my sister, fancy new pajamas, and Legos.

I'm thinking up so new ways to organize and store toys so that they get pulled out in groups and only one group at a time. Once I figure that out I'm sure you'll hear about it. Meanwhile, feel free to throw suggestions my way.

I'm going to go enjoy my readers edition Bible!!!

Public Service Announcement

I've been having trouble with my comments recently.  Several people have told me that they aren't working.  So, I am going to be playing around with them in the next few weeks.  Right now I have them set as anyone at anytime can comment. Let me know if you have any trouble.

Library and book total for year

Last Thursdsy when it was 24° F outside and super windy we went to the library. It wasn't as scary to take three little boys as I had thought. Although, there was no one else in the children's section. We'll see if I'm singing the same song once I take them and there are children everywhere.

I'm kind of a book snob. I turned down quite a few books that the boys randomly pulled off the shelf (there are a lot of junk children's books out there) and I directed them to series that I enjoy reading. We've been reading lots ever since.

In the last week I've read 4 books. That brings my yearly total to 39. I feel like I should finish one more to make that 40.  Oh wait. I finished the Old and New Testaments (I'm not going to count the Bible as 66 books, but I think it deserves at least two books - it is long) and our yearly devotional. So, that brings me up to 42. :)

42 total
4 books I didn't enjoy (2 by women 2 by men)
7 or 8 I hope to pull out again
14 fiction (4 of those from this week)
28 non-fiction
14 female
28 male
11 older than 80 years (I need to read more old books) suggestions?

I have one or two more I might finish.  I'll let you know If that happens.

Drawer Organizing

Is this weird?

I put pant and shirts on their sides so that I can see everything that is clean. I try to put clean clothes in the back so that they rotate through.

I roll matching pajamas up together.  It makes it so much easier to find them.

Do you have any children's clothing tips?

I need to figure out something for socks. Right now the boys share a drawer. Sometimes Warren wears socks that are too big and sometimes Martin wear socks that are too small. Other than getting a new dresser, which we have no room for, I don't have any other solutions for socks right now.

A little update

We've been doing a lot of reading. I finished a book this week! I stayed up late a few nights this week to read. 😳 One of my friends sent me the first Emily book by L.M. Montgomery for Christmas. She is a fun read. Not as charming as Anne, but enjoyable. They make me want to go visit P.E. Island again. I have the second two books on hold from the library.

We have been enjoying our table under the stairs in the play closet. This room (closet) is still one of my favorite places in the house. What a great space. It just makes me happy to be in there.

It makes me laugh because we often are sharing the same 12sqft, which is a little more than 1% of the house. I love having them in my space (most of the time). Some day they won't want to be anywhere near me (or each other). So, I am soaking it all in now while I have them. I love the little years!!

Faith of ten years ago is flabbergasted that present Faith is saying that. She had no idea what being a mom would do to her sense of what-really-matters. And she didn't think she would ever really like kids and would rather work and use her degree... She was wrong. She likes her own kids and she uses her degree all the time while managing children.

James is a pretty happy baby. He is usually only grumpy when he is hungry or sleepy or wants attention. But as soon as one of us talks to him he cheers up. He especially loves his brothers. He is sweet.

I've been working on some more Christmas presents. We've finished wrapping almost everything and putting together boxes to send to family. It was so much more relaxing to finish Christmas shopping in November. It has given me a chance to work on a few extra things that I didn't think I would have time for. A friend gave me five yards of vintage wool and it was perfect for a project that I had been wanting to do. Pictures coming after Christmas. :)

We are looking forward to doing some more Christmas baking next week. Is there something you make every year? We do chocolate covered prezels. Now that the kids are older, I might start doing gingerbread or sugar cookies... We will see. Do you have any other traditions?
